Type R - Create a word
With this type of question you are given two groups, each group consists of three words with the second word enclosed in brackes. The second word of the second group is left blank.
The word in brackets is made up from letters of the first and third words.
You are required to find the word that will fit in the brackets of the second group - It is related to the words outside of the brackets in the same way as the first group.
Begin by looking at the second word from first group and identify the positions of the corresponding letters from the words outside of the brackets. A good way of doing this is to write the second group of words directly below the first group, this makes it easy to identify the corresponding letters of the second group.
Lets look at an example:
stone (hone) hears steam (___) solve
Begin by writing the second group below the first group
stone (hone) hears
steam (s ) solve
The 'h' comes from the first letter of the second word - its corresponding letter from the second group is 's' - so you have the first letter. 's'.
stone (hone) hears
steam (se ) solve
The 'o' comes from the second letter of the first word - its corresponding letter from the second group is 'e' - so you have the second letter. 'e'.
stone (hone) hears
steam (sea ) solve
The 'n' comes from the third letter of the first word - its corresponding letter from the second group is 'a' - so you have the third letter. 'a'.
stone (hone) hears
steam (sea ) solve
The fourth letter, 'e' is a little tricky because there is an 'e' in both words outside of the brackets. It could be from position 5 of the first word or from position 2 of the second word. So it could be a 'm' or an 'o'. It is now a case of trying both letters and seeing which one makes up a real word. 'seam' is a real word and 'seao' is not - You have the answer 'seam'. If both letters make up a real word, look at the answer sheet to see which word is an option.
stone (hone) hears
steam (seam) solve
